Summerside History

Arouse Your Tastebuds-History

Summerside Vineyards was founded in 1999 as a bed and breakfast and was located on Grand Lake before moving in 2003 with the winery to its present location on Historic Rt 66 in Vinita, OK.

Marsha and Gary Butler, owners of Summerside Vineyards, Winery & Meadery, attended Oklahoma State University Marsha earned her BS in Sales and Management and Gary earned his BS in Computer Technical Education. Marsha and Gary also attended Grayson County College where Marsha earned her AE in Viticulture and Enology in 2005. They attended the first, 2001, OSU Grape Management Program and many other winemaking and viticulture seminars.

They have both served on several wine industry boards and in leadership positions in the Oklahoma Wine and Grape Association. They are members of Grand Wine Country, an association that encourages grape growers and winemakers alike to strive for quality and excellence. As accredited members of the Oklahoma Agritourism Association, they still play a part in the wine industry’s growth in Oklahoma.

Summerside Vineyards, winery & Meadery is currently located on Historic Rt 66 and I-44 (exit 289) in Vinita. It officially started in 2000, and in 2002 became a licensed winery and in 2008 started producing mead (wine made from honey).

Summerside’s four acre vineyard is located in Ketchum, OK,, near the banks of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokee. Two estates grapes are grown there the Cynthiana, a Native American hybrid red grape and the Vignoles, French American hybrid white varietal. Our estate Chambourcin Grape is grown in our Rt 66 Vineyard at the location of our tasting room, gift shop, Bistro and cellar.

Grape Varietals

Written by Chris Davis

Summerside’s Estate Grape Varietals:

Chambourcin--is a French/American hybrid; this variety is of unknown parentage but and can produce wines of light to full body with fruity aromas, cherry and earthy/spicy complexities; because of the thick skins, high tannins and good acidity it is good to pair with it with barbecue, pork, and grilled dishes.

It is a high-yielding, cold hardy plant; it is extremely vigorous and disease-resistant.grapes

Cynthiana—across the magical state line this grape is known as Norton. Cynthiana grapes produce a rich, full-bodied red wine with a dry character similar in style to Cabernet Sauvignon but with more spice. It makes a rich, full-bodied red wine with character, balanced with good berry flavors. It pairs well with grilled meats, smoked meat and wild game. At the 1873 Vienna World Exposition a Norton wine from Missouri won a gold medal. Henry Vizetelly, a noted critic of the time, said that Norton from Missouri would one day rival the great wines of Europe in quality and quantity, and many believe his prediction is now coming true.

The medium-sized clusters with small blue-black berries are hardy. It is one of the most disease resistant grape varieties, with some resistance even to blackrot.

Vignoles—a French/American hybrid; a result of a cross between Seibel 8665 and Pinot de Corton. A versatile white grape is used to produce wines ranging in flavor from dry to a sweet. Vignoles' has a floral aroma and fruity flavors of citrus, pineapple and apricot. Vignoles is an ideal accompaniment with Asian cuisine, fresh fruit, fruit desserts, any foods when one would enjoy a German Riesling.
