How to Host a Wine Horizontal Tasting Party
A horizontal tasting is a fun way to try wines, select an interesting grape you want to try, say Chambourcin. Then select three or four wines made with that grape, Summerside Wines of Rose of Chambourcin, 2011 Chambourcin, All American Road and Tantalizing Tana Lou.

Supplies:
E-vites or invitations
4 or more friends
3-4 wines (select the same grape) ½ bottle per person. You can provide or ask your friends to bring a bottle or two of wine made with the grapes selected or you provide and collect money to pay for them.
wine glasses (friends can bring their own, in a perfect world you would have a fresh glass for each wine per person to taste)
bucket
tasting crackers (we sell these)
water to rinse glasses
cheeses and crackers (try different cheeses with the different wines)
wine Score Sheets-1 per person check here (can be used for any type tasting)
pencil
wine mats (not needed but fancy) check here

Know what you want people to “find” in the tastes, these are suggestions that can be found on most wine websites.
Rose’ of Chambourcin (100% Oklahoma grown at Osage Hills Vineyards in Osage Co, OK.) Nice strawberry rose color and smells that are pleasant, clean and aromatic – very nice and balanced. Softer, lighter than Chambourcin. Good for when it is too hot for red wines, but need the red to stand up to the food. Grilled salmon, fish, tomato sauces or red sauce, pork chops with applesauce; green apples, strawberries, pears; toasted walnuts; crusty breads; Brie and Swiss cheeses. “Born to be Wild” Steppenwolf. “…looking for adventure.” Chilled.

2011 Chambourcin (100% Oklahoma grown at Sunset Ridge Vineyard in Duncan, OK) Beautiful, deep ruby color with hints of cassis in the nose and tastes of vanilla. Notice the lovely ruby color, taste is a vanilla background. Serve with steak. Notice how its compares to the Rose. If a Cabernet drinker comes to the table, start here, they will be pleased. Same pairings as a Cabernet; goes with everything. Beef, lamb, roast chicken; red or green grapes, cherries, figs, pears; walnuts, toasted almonds; fruit and nuts, pumpernickel or crusty breads; Asiago, Blue, Brie and Swiss cheeses —no seafood. “Always on My Mind” Willie Nelson. Bold and strong. Not chilled.

All American Road Chambourcin (Grown in Arkansas) Has a sweet/tart finish, tastes like a fruit (cherry) just before it is ready to be picked. Serve chilled or not, even served hot with our mulled wine mix. The colder it is served the tarter the finish. Roasted chicken, fun to drink. “Born In the USA” Bruce Springsteen. The name of the wine says it all. Serve chilled or not.

Tantalizing Tana Lou (A blend of Oklahoma Estate grown Rose’ of Chambourcin and Summerside Blackberry wine) Very aromatic with lots of fruit flavors, chill it. Pairs with everything or by itself. “I Want to Hold Your Hand” Beatles. Explodes with flavor, but yet a pretty blush color. Chilled.

*Open the wines about an hour before your tasting to let them “breathe,” or open up.

*Arrange the wines in a specific order so people can keep track of what they taste.

*Provide water and crackers (yep, we sell these also) for people to have between wines.

*Keep the initial pours small (1 oz. or 3/4 of an inch or so) to allow for people to go back and taste again later after they have tried all the wines.

*If you have the time, pair some cheese to the wines, and after you taste all the wines, then try them again with cheese to see how they change. The fat content, salt, and acidity of the cheese can significantly alter the “taste” of the wine for better or worse.

*Let everyone vote for their favorite one. **REMEMBER everyone’s tastes are different, you may like it today but not tomorrow. Enjoy, have fun!

Also try tasting by the state, country, region, latitude, color, color of bottle, shape of bottle, there are lots of ways to have a Wine Tasting Party.
