Redbud Award Our Thoughts

Redbud awards—

Yes, we are proud and brag, but we also want to thank 701Corp.com who took our ideas and the vision we had in our heads and made it work. To our families who had to live with us while we changed, corrected, read out loud, discussed and then changed it again. To the inventor of Post-It –Notes, yep, that is how we organized our content and buttons---everything we wanted we wrote on separate Post Its, then organized them into file folders representing the pull downs (buttons).

Our website is the hub or our social media, where we can refer customers to find everything about us and even where we can check on ourselves. We feel the way we set it up makes it easy to look around and explore from our Bistro menu, to wine terms. Please check it out for yourself at Summersidevineyards.com.

Helping to make tourism in Oklahoma better, and then to put it in a format to be judged can only help us to improve.

Watch out because  in 2013 we, at Summerside are planning a clean sweep of all Redbud Awards, oh yea, a clean sweep. OK, maybe we will not win them all but there are things we know we could be doing better---so, let the games for 2013 begin.

2012 Redbud Awards Honor Oklahoma's Top Tourism Entities

(Oklahoma City, Okla.) – Oklahoma's top tourism attractions, events, programs and organizations were honored during the annual Redbud Awards held Tuesday, May 8 in Oklahoma City. The awards represent the highest honor given in the Oklahoma tourism industry.

Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb and Discover Oklahoma television show host Jenifer Reynolds presented awards to 32 winners during a special evening gala held at the Oklahoma History Center.

More than 100 Redbud entries in 16 categories were evaluated by a slate of out-of-state tourism industry and marketing professionals. Judging criteria covered customer service and experience, marketing effectiveness, media relations, variety of audiences reached, value, and overall creativity. The Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department partners with the Oklahoma Travel Industry Association to present the annual Redbud Awards.

The Redbud Awards were held during National Tourism Week (May 5 – 13) which recognizes the importance of tourism to the national and local economies. Direct travel expenditures in Oklahoma generate more than $6.2 billion for the state's economy annually and support jobs for 74,900 residents.

Summerside Vineyard at The Castle

It is that time of year to get in the mood for the Renaissance Fair in Muskogee, Oklahoma. As for the last several years Summerside Vineyards will be there. Each year we suggest our Ambassadors use Old English and in 2010--Betty S. attended The Castle Dialect Class, shared her notes with us. Also, here you will find a few keys points from Renaissance Web Reference.

The Castle in Muskogee is a wonderful time for all ages. So get your costumes ready, start practicing on your Old English so a merry time at the fair will be had by all. Summerside will again be located in the Clock Tower (wine and mead tasting) and also the Italian Quarter (Italian sandwiches, fruit trays and Wine-A-Ritas). The fair is open every weekend from April 28th through May 28th.

When to Use "Thou"

  1. Those below you on the chain.
  2. Those to whom you are especially close (family members, best friends, lovers, etc.).
  3. Those of your own rank whom you wish to insult.
  4. God, because in Period thought, there is nobody closer to you than God.

Use "you" with the following:

  1. Those above you on the Great Chain. Always call the King and Queen "you!"
  2. Those with whom you are doing business.
  3. Those to whom you wish to show respect for any reason (admiration, personal threat, etc.)

How to Use "Thou"

I

play

thou

playest

he/she/it

playeth

we

play

you

play

Contractions

Avoid using modern-sounding contractions:

  • don't
  • can't
  • won't
  • ain't
  • I'll
  • it's

Use instead the un-contracted forms ("do not," "can not," etc.)

Other contractions that can be used, however:

  • 'tis
  • 'twill
  • 'twould
  • is't
  • was't
  • shan't
  • to't (that's "to it")
  • e're
  • ne're

The Dreaded Letters, and Other Things to Avoid

Substituting a Period term, such as "'tis well," "most well," "very well," "goodly then," or even "all right" and not use “OK.”

Avoid: the word "fun" use "merriment" or "merry"; the phrase "you guys," and all "-up" expressions ("put up," "clean up," or especially "shut up").

Forming Negatives

 "Explode" the contraction to "do not" or "will not.” OR simply insert the "not" into the sentence almost anywhere after the verb.  "Give me not an ale."

Imperatives

 "Give you me that," or "Give thou that unto me," depending on whom you are speaking to.

Reflexives

"I will go to the privies."

becomes

"I will take me to the privies."

"He went to court."

becomes

"He betook him to court."

"She drank an ale."

becomes

"She drank her an ale."

 "aye" for "yes"

 "nay" for "no."

“pray” for “please.”

Drop "to"

"Give it to me."

becomes

"Give it me."

"I will show it to thee."

becomes

"I will show it thee."

Adding "Do"

"We find it to our liking."

becomes

"We do find it to our liking."

"Thou playest well."

becomes

"Thou dost play well."

"He hath a fine leg."

becomes

"He doth have a fine leg."

Greetings and Farewells

A simple way of adding a Period flavor to your speech is the use of a proper greeting. Period greetings include:

  • Good morrow!
  • Good day!
  • God save you!

A proper farewell is also useful. Remember, this is the last thing the patrons will hear from you, so it is always good to leave them with a Period phrase in their ears!

  • Farewell!
  • God speed!
  • God save you!

Pick a greeting and a farewell for your character. You can use one of the above, or create one that reflects your character's profession (for example, a tavern maid might open conversation with "'Tis a good day for drinkin'").

Self-Distribution

February 1st is a BIG day for Summerside Vineyards, on that day we start self-distribution, that means we control when liquor stores will receive our wines because we will get it there ourselves.

No middle man.

Summerside Wholesale Ambassadors go to stores and get orders or stores can call the winery (918-256-3000) and order; and shortly, stores will be able to order on line.

No waiting days or weeks for the orders to be delivered. This is new and WONDERFUL so spread the word.

Summerside Rt66 Fruit Wines and Meads will be what we self-distribute at this time, they are listed below. What a great time of year for stores to know they can get Rt66 Raspberry Wine for Valentine's Day. Or Hard Apple Cider can be purchased to go with cheddar cheese appetizers. Or for a wedding shower, Orange Blossom Mean can be served because one can purchase it from their local liquor store.

We also offer to stores who carry us, Facebook* time. We have over 2000 fans on Facebook, not bad for a little winery/meadery in Oklahoma. For added support we also offer on our website Shelf Talkers** so that liquor stores and their customers will know our wines better. Some of our labels even have QR Codes *** telling more about the product.

So please contact your local liquor store and tell them that Summerside Vineyards Winery and Meadery will start tomorrow with self- distribution.

If you are a liquor store and would like a trained Summerside Whole Ambassador to call on you, just send a request or questions to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

2000th "Like" on Facebook

2000th “Like” on Facebook.

Can you believe it? We are so excited, this was a goal we made, but never dreamed we would make, come on you know you make goals and never dream they will happen (thanks Lisa). 2000 may not sound like much to you but two years ago we didn’t even know how to log onto Facebook (ask my daughter). We also had no idea how much this social media devise could help us learn and promote.

Thanks to you (if you have Liked us) this means we are doing something right. This shows us that people care about Summerside Vineyards, Marsha and Gary (owners), wine knowledge, and yes even Oklahoma liquor laws.

We have tried to post quotes about wine and mead to get you to think; a few wine/mead lessons are sprinkled in along the way to get you to try; posting of events and festivals to get you to do. Even reposting or “Sharing” events to support the great state of Oklahoma, Historic  Rt66 and yes, even other wineries.

Facebook is where we now turn to see what people are saying about us, we have learned things from those that “Like” us---things we are doing good and things that we are doing not so good and need to change.

If you have not checked us out and “Liked” us, I suggest you do it now at http://www.facebook.com/summersidewinery?sk=app_4949752878 .

And as we start this New Year we vow to continue to help educated and to support Oklahoma wines and meads.

Salute’ to you.

Cooking with Wine

Christmas Cake Recipe - for those of you who can't remember last year's cake recipe.

Ingredients:

*  2 cups flour

* 1 stick butter

* 1 cup of water

* 1 tsp baking soda

* 1 cup of sugar

* 1 tsp salt

* 1 cup of brown sugar

* Lemon juice

* 4 large eggs

* Nuts

* 2 bottles of wine

* 2 cups of dried fruit

Sample the wine to check quality Take a large bowl, check the wine again. To be

sure it is of the highest quality, pour one
level cup and drink.

Repeat.

Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one

teaspoon of sugar. Beat again. At this point it's best to make sure the wine is

still OK. Try another cup... Just in case. Turn off the mixerer thingy. Break 2
eggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit.

Pick the frigging fruit up off floor. Mix on the turner.. If the fried druit

gets stuck in the beaterers just pry it loose with a drewscriver.

Sample the wine to check for tonsisticity. Next, sift two cups of salt or something. Check the wine. Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table.. Add a spoon of sugar, or some fink. Whatever you can find.

Greash the oven. Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over. Don't

forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the window.

Finish the wine and wipe counter with the cat.

Take a taxi to Tesco and buy cake..

WineAmerica Supports Federal Bill That Allows USPS to Deliver Wine to Consumers

The Senate recently introduced S. 1789, the "21st Century Postal Service Act of 2011."

The bill would allow "a licensed winery" to ship via USPS "in accordance with the law of the state, territory, or district of the United States where the addressee or a duty authorized agent takes delivery." Wineries would gain the ability to ship through USPS to consumers, provided they followed state shipping laws with respect to licensing, tax payment, and regulatory control.

WineAmerica supports the goals of the bill because the provision would give wineries and consumers greater access and choice with respect to the delivery of wine subject to state shipping law.

See the full report here http://library.constantcontact.com/download/get/file/1102037603213-199/Postal+Service+Act.pdf .

Wine Drinkers Gaining

Wine drinkers are gaining. Beer drinkers beware. I see it in my personal life with my family. It seems like more and more are starting to drink wine even at sporting events. I think it has to do with the fact one gets a choice. At one time, me, the wine drinker in the family had a choice of sodas or beers at events so I'd choose beer. But, now more and more I see the choice of wine. Now, I select what I want and just pick something.

Rt66 Summerside Vineyard's Wine Bottle Mummy

Mummy Spirits

Scare up some Halloween spirit by turning an ordinary wine bottle into a delightfully sinister mummy. A spooky disguise for a wine bottle -- it's a Good Thing!

Tools and Materials

Paper towels
Cheesecloth
Coffee (cooled)
Flour
Corn syrup
Glue (optional)
Mixing bowl
Craft stick
Foam brush
Mad scientist sticker
Bottle of wine

Mummy Spirits How-To

1. Dip paper towel and cheesecloth in cooled coffee. Crumple paper towel and cheesecloth; allow to dry overnight.

2. Make a solution to attach paper towel to bottle: mix together 2 tablespoons flour, 1 tablespoon corn syrup, and 1 tablespoon coffee (cooled); stir with craft stick. With a foam brush, apply a thin layer of solution to areas of bottle to be covered with paper towel, being sure to do only one area at a time because solution dries quickly. (Glue can be used in place of solution if desired.)

3. Cover bottle with paper towel, leaving an open spot to show name of wine. Cut or rip cheesecloth into strips. Take dried cheesecloth and wrap around bottle to create the look of a mummy. Use some of the paste to make cheesecloth stay put if necessary.

4. Attach mad scientist sticker.
